On Sunday November 8th over 400 guests gathered at the Slovenian Church Hall, 737 Brown’s Line to enjoy a deliciously prepared Slovenian lunch and raise funds for Dom Lipa. It was a fun-filled afternoon that highlighted the generous support of the Dom Lipa community and an opportunity to recognize those who help make it the warm and caring residence it is.

We are pleased to report that the event raised $10,000 which included ticket sales, raffle, bake sale, donations and bar sales.  Funds raised will help Dom Lipa to continue to enhance and improve programs and activities for its residents.

With an enjoyable Dom Lipa 2015 Highlights slide show playing on stage, the program included updates from the Slovenian Linden Foundation President Maria Zajc McDonald and Vice President Sonya Rosenwirth.  The Elderly Person’s Group were commended for working hard all year to create beautiful craft and knitted items to fundraise at the luncheon.  Dom Lipa staff, volunteers and resident’s family members donated hundreds of delicious goodies for the bake sale.  Introductions were made for Slovenian Linden Foundation Board members, Dom Lipa staff, volunteers (past and present) and Dom Lipa residents who were in attendance.

Anthony Klemenčič, past president, provided a brief history of Dom Lipa. The home opened on January 4, 1988 as a 60 Suite Retirement Home.  It was remodeled in 1991 to 30 long-term care beds with the remainder kept at 30 retirement on the second floor.  A new wing opened in 2004 with an additional 36 long-term care beds.  Today, the retirement home (independent living) is private and Dom Lipa controls the waiting list.  The long-term care residence (nursing home) is government funded to make it affordable for residents and the ministry controls the admissions.  As part of our strategic plan to better differentiate between the two types of resident care that we offer, we are now researching a separate name for our retirement home.  Feedback ballots for name suggestions were provided to guests and collected at the conclusion of the luncheon.  The plan is to announce the new name at the Slovenian Linden Foundation AGM on April 3rd.  We invite name suggestions to be submitted to info@domlipa.ca .

Top performers from Dom Lipa’s 2015 Walk-A-Thon were celebrated and their names added to trophies displayed in the Dom Lipa front lobby.  We hope to see you on June 5, 2016 for the next Sunny Sonček Walk-a-thon!

Father Ivan Plazar said grace before the luncheon began, the meal beautifully prepared by Maria Soršak and her excellent team of cooks and servers.

The luncheon featured a raffle with 6 fabulous prizes:  $100, $250, $500, a Fit bit donated by Ridley Funeral Home, an iPod Nano donated by Motion Specialties, a Silpada Sterling Silver necklace and pendant donated by Sandy Cestnik and a beautiful gift basket donated by the SLF Board.

To bid farewell, a carnation (the official Slovenian flower) with thank you message was handed to each guests as they left the 2015 Dom Lipa Luncheon.

We would like to thank all those who helped make the 2015 Dom Lipa luncheon a social, informative and fun event.

We look forward to seeing you at next year’s Dom Lipa Luncheon on Sunday November 6, 2016!

Nasvidenje!
